Why go now
The Andaman coast is unusable in the monsoon — island ferries stop, Phi Phi day trips get cancelled, and the sea is brown. From the first week of November the water goes glass-flat, the islands reopen properly and the humidity drops into what Thais call the cool season. Loy Krathong and Yi Peng also fall in November, which is the one night a year Chiang Mai fills the sky with lanterns.

The flight and the hotel are the easy part. Everything that goes wrong on a first trip abroad goes wrong in the two weeks before departure or in the twenty minutes at immigration.

If it is your first Thailand trip, two nights in Bangkok is worth it for the palaces and the food. If you have been before, skip it entirely and put those nights on Krabi or Koh Lanta — the domestic flight adds three hours to your day and Bangkok in transit is a poor use of a short trip.
Yes, though less dramatically than a decade ago. Food and transport remain cheap; beachfront hotels in Phuket and Krabi have risen a lot. Vietnam is now cheaper on the ground, but Thailand has better beaches, easier logistics and no visa at all — which is why it stays the most-booked first international trip from India.
Very. Short flight, no visa, excellent hospitals, hotels that genuinely cater to children, and Indian food everywhere. Choose Krabi or Khao Lak over Patong, and skip the full-day island-hopping boats with under-fives — the sea legs are long.
