Chinar autumn and the saffron harvest — a three-week window

Why go now

Everyone photographs Kashmir in spring, which is why nobody warns you that autumn is better. From the second week of October the chinars in Nishat and the Mughal gardens turn through amber to deep red, the tourist crush of May has gone home, and the Pampore saffron fields bloom purple for roughly two weeks around late October — the shortest and most specific travel window in the country. Snow has not yet closed Gulmarg's road, so you get autumn colour and the gondola in one trip.

  • All permits, entry formalities and inter-city transfers
  • A named coordinator on WhatsApp for the length of the trip

Not included

  • Lunches, and any meal not named in the itinerary
  • Monument and activity tickets unless stated on your quote
  • Anything personal — laundry, tips, phone, medical

Know before you go

  • 1Saffron bloom is weather-dependent and cannot be guaranteed to the day. We time departures to the historical peak and tell you honestly if a season is running early or late.
  • 2Nights get genuinely cold from late October — single digits in Srinagar, near zero in Pahalgam. Houseboats have heaters but they are not central heating.
  • 3Check the current advisory before you travel. We monitor it for every departure and will move or refund a window rather than run it if the situation changes.

Questions

Kashmir — Frequently asked

If yours is not here, call or WhatsApp us — the desk answers, not a bot.

The tourist circuit — Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg — has been running normally and receives millions of Indian visitors a year. We track the official advisory and local conditions for each departure window, and we will postpone or refund rather than send a group into an unstable week. If you want the current read on a specific date, ask on the call and we will give you a straight answer.

At Apharwat, above the second gondola stage, usually yes from late October. In Srinagar and Pahalgam, no — that starts in late December. If snow is the reason for the trip, you want January, and we will say so rather than sell you an autumn window.

One or two nights on a good houseboat is worth doing and the rest in a hotel. Houseboats are beautiful and cold, the bathrooms are small, and the novelty wears off by night three. Our standard Kashmir itinerary splits it exactly that way, and you can shift the balance on the call.
