Bali's wet season starts in November and runs to March, and it is not a light drizzle — it is a daily afternoon downpour that closes beach clubs and makes the Ubud rice terraces a mudbath. Right now you are in the tail of the dry season: clear mornings, calm water at Nusa Penida, and the whole island functioning. Prices also soften slightly in September and October between the European summer and the Christmas rush.

Know before you go

1Visa on arrival is 500,000 IDR, payable by card at the airport. It is straightforward, but keep the receipt — you need it to extend.
2Traffic between Ubud, Canggu and Uluwatu is far worse than the map suggests. Two hours for a 30 km drive is normal; plan two bases, not one.
3The tourist levy of 150,000 IDR per person is now compulsory and is separate from the visa. Pay it online before you fly to skip the airport queue.

The flight and the hotel are the easy part. Everything that goes wrong on a first trip abroad goes wrong in the two weeks before departure or in the twenty minutes at immigration.

Both, split. Three nights in Ubud for the rice terraces, temples and jungle villas, then three near Seminyak, Uluwatu or Nusa Dua for the beach. Staying in only one and day-tripping to the other means four hours in traffic each way, which is the most common Bali mistake we correct.

Very — Ubud in particular has one of the best vegetarian and vegan restaurant scenes in Asia, and Indian restaurants are common in Seminyak and Kuta. Jain travellers should still brief the hotel in advance; we do that as standard.

Six is the sweet spot. Five works if you skip Nusa Penida. Anything under five and you spend a disproportionate share of the trip on the airport road. Eight lets you add the Gili Islands or Nusa Lembongan, which is a genuinely different experience.
