Why go now
Vietnam is long enough to have three different climates at once, and the north is the part that only works for part of the year. From September the summer rain stops, Ha Long Bay's cruises stop getting cancelled for storms, and Sapa's rice terraces turn from green to gold in the weeks before the September harvest. October and November are dry, mild and clear — the single best stretch for a Hanoi-to-Ha Long-to-Sapa loop.

The flight and the hotel are the easy part. Everything that goes wrong on a first trip abroad goes wrong in the two weeks before departure or in the twenty minutes at immigration.

In this window, north. Hanoi, Ha Long, Ninh Binh and Sapa are all at their best from September to November, while central Vietnam around Hoi An and Da Nang is in its wettest months and can flood. If you want Hoi An, come in February to April instead — and we will tell you that rather than sell you a soaked itinerary.
On the ground, yes — food, transport and mid-range hotels all cost noticeably less. Flights are comparable. A six-night Vietnam trip typically lands ₹8,000–15,000 per person below the equivalent Thailand trip, which is why it has become the default first international trip for a lot of Indian travellers.
In harvest season, yes, comfortably. The expressway has cut the road journey to about five and a half hours, and the terraces in late September are among the great landscapes in Asia. Outside harvest, when the fields are bare mud, it is a long way for a view — and we will say so.
