Bhutan's monsoon leaves cloud sitting on the valleys until late September, and by January the high passes are cold and bare. October and November are the clear months — the Himalaya is visible from Dochula on most days, the Tiger's Nest climb is dry underfoot, and the tshechu festival calendar runs through the autumn with masked dances at Thimphu, Jakar and Trongsa. It is also the only Himalayan country you can visit as an Indian without a visa.

Know before you go

1Indians pay a Sustainable Development Fee of Nu 1,200 per person per night. It is not optional and it is the single largest line in a Bhutan budget after flights.
2Entry needs a passport or a voter ID card. An Aadhaar card is not accepted.
3The Tiger's Nest climb is 900 vertical metres over four to five hours round trip. Horses go part of the way up and not down.

Nu 1,200 per person per night for Indian nationals, which is Nu 6,000 for a five-night trip. It cannot be avoided or discounted, and any agent telling you otherwise is either overcharging elsewhere or planning to under-declare your nights. Children between six and twelve pay half; under-sixes are exempt.

Fly if the budget allows — Paro is one of the most dramatic approaches in aviation and it saves two days. Driving in via Phuentsholing from Bagdogra is much cheaper but costs a full day each way on mountain road. From Kolkata the flight is only an hour, which makes the calculation easy.

If you want an intact Himalayan Buddhist culture without the commercialisation of Nepal's trekking circuit, yes. If you are primarily after mountain scenery on a budget, Nepal or Sikkim give you more for less. We would rather point you there than sell you a Bhutan trip you resent paying for.
